Storm Damage Storm Damage

Living in coastal Florida, we know that storms can strike unexpectedly. Whether it's a tropical storm or a full-blown hurricane, storm preparedness is key to minimizing damage to your home or business. At SERVPRO of Destin, Seaside & Freeport, we want to help you prepare before the storm hits, so you’re not left scrambling afterward.

Top Tips for Storm Preparedness

  1. Inspect Your Roof and Gutters
Ensure your roof is in good condition and that gutters are clear of debris. This helps prevent leaks and water damage during heavy rain or wind.

  2. Trim Trees and Secure Outdoor Items
Storms bring strong winds, and loose items or overgrown trees can cause damage to your property. Secure or bring inside any outdoor furniture, grills, or other items.

  3. Check Your Windows and Doors
Make sure windows and doors are properly sealed and consider installing storm shutters for extra protection. Broken windows or doors can lead to serious water damage during a storm.

  4. Create an Emergency Kit
Stock up on essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, and first-aid supplies. If you’re forced to evacuate, you’ll be prepared to leave quickly.

Burst pipes, overflowing toilets, or leaking water heaters can cause significant water damage if not addressed quickly. Over time, even small drips can lead to mold growth or structural issues.

Sandestin Community Participates in National Preparedness Month Programs?

9/12/2023 (Permalink)

Windows are boarded up in preparation for a hurricane. We are leaders in storm damage restoration in Walton County.

Our local Destin, Seaside, and Freeport teams have been restoring storm damage in Sandestin for over twenty years. Powerful storms can cause severe damage to homes and properties, and we want everyone to be prepared to weather any storm or disaster.

Every September, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) hosts National Preparedness Month, a month filled with information, activities, community initiatives, and awareness campaigns to create awareness about the importance of being prepared for disasters and emergencies. This year, the campaigns focus on elderly populations and their unique needs. Additional resources will be posted on Ready.gov/older-adults.

Addressing the unique needs for support and services older individuals may require in an emergency not only boosts their ability to endure difficult situations but also lessens the effects of emergencies on their well-being. The elderly may encounter heightened risks during disasters due to factors like prescribed medications, reliance on specialized medical equipment, or the need for specific care, all of which can be severely impacted during emergencies. Also, older populations are particularly susceptible to heat or cold-related illnesses and dehydration. By preparing in advance to meet their unique needs, we can safeguard their welfare and maintain their safety during disasters and emergencies.

Are You Ready for the Second Half of Hurricane Season in Destin?

8/29/2023 (Permalink)

A satellite view of a hurricane is seen approaching Florida. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Okaloosa County.

We are already halfway through hurricane season, and historically, September and October have the highest hurricane and tropical storm activity, so our local Destin, Seaside, and Freeport teams encourage residents to stay prepared for severe weather. The National Weather Service, and National Hurricane Center, monitor and issue hurricane warnings to residents of impending hurricane activity. Here are the terms used by the National Weather Service (NWS) to describe changing hurricane conditions:

Tropical Storm or Hurricane Advisory

The NWS issues an Advisory when it expects conditions to cause significant inconveniences that may be hazardous. If caution is used, these situations should not be life-threatening.

Tropical Storm or Hurricane Watch

The NWS issues a Watch when a tropical storm or hurricane is possible within forty-eight hours. Tune in to NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards, local radio, TV, or other news sources for more information. Monitor alerts, check your emergency supplies, and gather any items you may need if you lose power.

Tropical Storm or Hurricane Warning

The NWS issues a Warning when it expects a tropical storm or hurricane within thirty-six hours. During a Warning, complete your storm preparations and immediately leave the threatened area if directed to do so by local officials.
