October is National Fire Prevention Month. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) often writes that the United States has a “fire problem,” because most of the fires (by an immense margin) are preventable.

Our Destin, Seaside, Freeport team, therefore, is passing along their reminders about the two most common causes of fires in the U.S. and how to prevent them:

Cooking

• About 50% of fires in U.S. homes start in the kitchen
• Often from over-heated grease
• Almost always happen to experienced cooks who leave the kitchen to attend to other tasks
• Clean grease from the oven and the stove before cooking again
• Smother small grease fires with metal lids on pots, by sprinkling salt or baking soda on the fire, or by using a Class-B or Class-K fire extinguisher (note: these chemicals may cause additional damage)
• Never douse grease-fire flames with water, as the water allows the grease to spread
